❖ About the festival /
Halloween is a very uncommon holiday and it is celebrated on the 31st of October. Many children of the USA and Canada love it and look forward to it. They prepare for it in advance. They decide on their Halloween role: will they be ghosts or witches, pirates or monsters, famous movie stars or princesses? They usually wear different costumes, masks and makeup, so that no one recognizes them. Some of them buy costumes, but others get help from their parents and make special costumes themselves. Schools hold Halloween parties and celebrations. |
❖ Halloween Symbols /
There is a variety of Halloween’s symbols. For example, a pumpkin which must be carved. The Halloween pumpkin is called Jack O’Lantern. The custom is to clean out the inside of a pumpkin, carve a face out of it, and put a light inside. Then put it in the window. People also decorate homes with pictures of ghosts, spiders, witches, bats and black cats. They share scaring stories about ghosts and haunted places. |
❖ Traditions /
When Halloween evening comes, children take part in the most famous Halloween tradition. They walk around from house to house, knock on the door and shout: "Trick or treat!" If the person who answers the door doesn’t give the children a treat (sweets or candies), they play a trick on him or her. However, more often people give sweets to these children. Children have special bags to collect candies, chocolates, popcorn (neighbors give them a variety of things!). |
Not only children enjoy Halloween. Adults are also keen on dressing up in special costumes and celebrating this day. |
